Coimbra

Since the capital of Portugal (from 1139 to 1256), Coimbra is one of the most historic cities in the country, famous for its university, which is one of the oldest in Europe (founded in 1290). Although it may not have the contemporary attractions of Lisbon and Porto, it is rich in centenary monuments that illustrate each chapter of the history of architecture, and the university and its surroundings are listed as a World Heritage Site.
Easily accessible by train or bus between the two largest cities in the country, it is worth visiting not only for the monumental university but also for the ancient site of Conimbriga, which has some of the best-preserved Roman mosaics in Europe. Between this, choose between the different Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque churches, and visit one of the best national museums in Portugal.

Évora

Conquered in 59 BC by the Romans, who gave it the name of "Liberalitas Julia", Évora acquired great importance as evidenced by the still visible remains and of which are examples the ruins of a graceful temple from the late 2nd century, several sections of wall and the door called Dona Isabel, as well as the ruins of the city's thermal baths under the City Hall building.

Lisbon

On the right bank of the wide estuary of the Tagus River, the capital of Portugal sits on charming hills, enjoys a unique geographical location, which it owes to its fate as a cosmopolitan city. Its exceptional light, a delight for writers, photographers, and filmmakers, the clear houses that climb the hills, where the ocher color of the roofs stands out, the polychromy of the tiles on the facades, and the winding streets of the old neighborhoods give it the peculiar atmosphere of a city of transition between northern Europe and the Mediterranean south.

The chosen place for commercial exchanges with ancient merchant peoples and navigators, Lisbon's long history begins in the Phoenician Alis-Ubbo, to transform, in the 2nd century, into the Roman Felicita Julia Olisipo, in the Arab Aschbouna from the 8th century, in a Portuguese city in 1147, when it was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and finally in the capital of the country, in 1255.

On foot through the typical neighborhoods, by tram through the old areas, going up or down the hills in secular elevators, by boat on a ride along the Tagus, or even by metro, a true underground museum of contemporary Portuguese art, all means are good to discover the cultural diversity of great interest that Lisbon offers.

Madeira

In the middle of the Atlantic, the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are a refuge of natural beauty. Between the blue of the sea and the emerald green of the vegetation, the exotic color of the flowers stands out, in an archipelago where two-thirds are protected areas and where the largest laurel forest in the world is found.

The spring-like temperature that is felt all year round invites outdoor activities. You can take walks on foot, taking advantage of the network of paths along the levadas, visit the city of Funchal and get to know the heritage related to the Age of Discoveries or explore the island freely. Boat trips are an excellent option to appreciate the coastline and have a different perspective.

Porto

Capital and gateway to the northern region, Porto is an ancient city that gave its name to Portugal and a wine known worldwide: Port Wine.

With a magnificent location by the mouth of the Douro River and an architectural complex of exceptional value, the historic center of Porto is a World Heritage Site since 1996. It is the capital of the North and the 2nd city of the country; its entrepreneurial population and marked commercial vocation, since always affirmed its will against impositions and invaders, being therefore Porto also known as the "invicta" city.

Beyond its patrimonial value, it is interesting to discover in Porto its strong urban personality and its so singular human character.

To better know the city, it is advisable to walk it slowly and admire the typical houses and the granite monuments, take a tram route along the River or a boat trip under the six bridges, enjoying a different perspective. We suggest two itineraries, different proposals for two days of walking, which aim to highlight the impressive contrasts that the city offers. The "Baixa" of Porto, with its pulsing urban life, movement, intense trade, its peculiar expression that combines the atmosphere of a Nordic and merchant city with the intense and spiritual Baroque.
